Just another youth film on the lines of Dil Chahta Hai is how you can best describe the movie in a single sentence. The script of
Bandra West ProductionsBas Yun Hi seems to be chalked out over a cup of coffee. There's no seriousness in any department
of filmmaking. Lack of professionalism seems to be their undoing.
Three friends, Aditya (Purab), an assistant director, Kabir (Sameer Malhotra), a chef, and Rohan
(Rajiv Gopalakrishnan), a stockbroker, are very much like the trio of Dil Chahta Hai. They fall apart, after a mere prank by
Aditya goes haywire. He plots a meeting with one, Veda (Nandita Das), but tempers build up when things don't go as planned.
------
And finally / obviously (as you like it), they do sort out the misunderstandings and patch up. The story lacks the original touch. At times, the dialogues
seem to get to your nerves. Take this mother asks son Beta, khana khaya? Son replies Roz khata hoon, aadat hai!
The screenplay is loose in spite of the length of the movie as short as an ordinary Hollywood fickle (1 and 3/4th hours).
Of the cast, Purab Kohli shows confidence. The camera-friendly VJ should take his acting seriously, as he has potential. As for the others, they are just
about o.k.
Whereas, what's the offbeat movie star, Nandita Das doing in this film? Well, the dusky Das is a clear waste here. The director isn't able to get out the best
from such as talented actress.
VREDICT: Don't be surprised if the filmmaker replies to a query on why did he make this film? Bas Yun Hi.
