To call CHANDNI BAR an entertainer is total injustice to the film. The film depicts the area, which has been seen negatively
by the society. It reveals the women who work in beer bars which leads to prostitution due to
livlihood problems.
Mumtaz (Tabu) comes to Mumbai after the communal riots in Seetapur, Uttar Pradesh where she looses
her parents, home & almost everything.
Here she stays with her only
relative, uncle, who takes her to Chandni Bar, a famous beer bar, for a job till she gets
any good job (which is ofcourse impossible to get). A few days later, this uncle rapes Mumtaz, and shes helpless.
She starts dancing in the bar, Pothya (Atul Kulkarni) who is a frequent to the bar gets the eye with
Mumtaz & asks her for a night, she refuses initially but Pothya pressures her & she gives
up. Pothya comes to know about the rape with Mumtaz. In a rage of fury he kills Mumtaz's uncle and finally they get married.
It was not long when Mumtaz gives birth to a baby boy & later a baby girl. She is happy with
her life but the happiness doesn't last enough for Mumtaz. Pothya is shot in an encounter
with the Police.
Mumtaz is once again alone, she goes to the gang members of Pothya but they also had bad intentions
to her. She finally decides to return to Chandani bar & make her children educated and keep them away
from this dirty field. This goes well upto some years until her son is caught in an
uncommitted extortion case. To get him released she needs lots of money & starts
prostitution & her daughter starts working as dancer in the bar where Mumtaz is
working.
The son is released, but the incidence changes him into a criminal from an innocent boy. He shoots the two,
who had sexually harassed him in the prison.
The movie is one of
the best realistic stories since Satya. The film is focused on the women who
work in beer bars & red light areas. It’s a low budget movie with no songs or beautiful scenes shot in beauties
of Switzerland or even in India.
The movie is only carried by Tabu; she has done marvelous job as Mumtaz. She promises an
award for the performance. Atul Kulkarni is good in his role, with a thrilling entry. Preety Khare with a
little role does a justice with her role.
The Music given by Raju Singh gives audience a feel of the movie. Dialogues by Masud Mirza and Mohan Azaad
are realistic. Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar who has done a remarkably good job. He has given a different
view of women in beer bars.
