David Dhawan is back with a bang. After giving us some forgettable films in the recent past, Dhawan
seems to be making a ‘comeback of sorts’ with his latest flick, "Chor Machaaye Shor". He’s improved several notches since his
last misadventure, “Yeh Hai Jalwa”. And that’s a good sign for him as well as the industry.
The basic theme is remotely similar to the recent hit, “Awara Paagal Deewana” (which too was an action thriller
involving the chase of diamonds). Coming back to ‘CMS’, Shyam (Bobby Deol) is a small-time thief, who robs a 30-crore
diamond and hides it in an under-construction site, which turns out to be a police headquarters. To get hold of his
loot, he transforms himself into an inspector, Ram Singh, without much trouble. There he meets a lady officer
Ranjita Kaur (Bipasha Basu), who is smitten by the dashing Ram Singh. But there’s also ACP Ranbir (Paresh Rawal) who is clean
bowled by Ram’s heroics as an inspector, and in turn, wants Ram to marry his own daughter, Kajal (Shilpa Shetty).
------
Confusion builds up as Kajal is in love with Ram’s earlier version, the thief, Shyam. But Shyam, or rather Ram, is
in no way interested in any of the girls. His sole aim – to get the diamond, which he does
achieve, but not before giving a good chase to his accomplices in crime, who pop up every now and then
to get a share of the booty.
The screenplay is predictable with the usual fight and dance sequences at regular intervals. But the script passes the
test with interesting sub-plots, revolving around a lot of mistaken identities, which add up to lend support to the twisting story-line.
The dialogues are, in one word – hilarious.
Of the cast, Bobby Deol does more of ‘action’ than ‘comedy’. He is his usual self. Whereas, Shilpa Shetty is at relative ease,
doing her ‘now-famous’ item numbers. The other ‘sex-kitten’ imaged, Bipasha Basu is reduced to just a small role,
leaving you asking for more. Shekhar Suman comes to the hero’s rescue, in as many as seven
different characters.
As for the veterans, Paresh Rawal keeps you smiling with his comic timing. But Om Puri gets the best role of all the characters, as the over-suspicious inspector, Pandey.
He plays the biggest thorn in Bobby’s plans to get the diamond.
VERDICT : Look forward to what Dhawan is best at – COMEDY.
