"You Will Be Deceived By What You See" says the promos. So far…so good…well what's the story, you ask.
It goes this way. A music magnate is killed in cold blood. A suspect is caught red-handed. But a singer is not convinced
that the suspect is able to do the crime. Hence, she hires a lawyer with a 'never-lost-a-case' record to prove the
suspect's innocence. Next, the lawyer win's his client's case.
That's the story. So what's the big deal in it? You have the right to reason. Hey, but wait a minute
before jumping to any conclusion. In fact, its more than what meets the eye.
The former assistant of Raj Kapoor (Prem Rog), Anees Bazmee directs Ajay Devgan for the third time in a
row (after 'Hulchul' & 'Pyar To Hona Hi Tha'), to make a love triangle with a murder mystery as the backdrop. Also
starring Akshaye Khanna and Urmila Matondkar, "Deewangee" evokes mixed feelings from the audience.
------
Well, the story again...but now with a dash of some suspense. Raj Goyal (Akshaye Khanna) is a criminal lawyer, who has yet to
lose a case. A music head, Ashwin Mehta (Vijendra Ghatge) is murdered ruthlessly with a butcher's knife. Evidences lead to Taran (Ajay Devgan), who
is caught in the vicinity of the victim's bungalow. But Sargam (Urmila Matondkar), a star singer, intervenes, as she knows
Taran inside out because they were friends since childhood. She turns towards Raj, to save him from the clutches of law. They win the case, as Taran is proved innocent.
But you come to know Taran's real identity towards the interval. Taran turns out to be Ranjit, a daredevil character, in
sharp contrast to the innocent looking Taran. Raj comes to know of his split personality and now, is hell bent to reopen
the case to punish Taran / Ranjit.
All this while a love triangle blossoms between the three. This makes it all the more interesting. In the end, you keep guessing if one of the lead actors
is really alive or not.
The cameraman seems focused on the edgy script to a large extent. A couple of good twists to the plot help the
film to keep the suspense moving.
Of the cast, Urmila Matondkar is just about average. Akshaye Khanna's career chart is moving upwards with every passing movie. He displays a similar performance
to that of his last role in Humraaz.
Lastly, Ajay Devgan is on a high after 'Company' & 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh'. He packs the right amount of 'deewangee' to his role,
which is clearly the highlight of the film.
VERDICT : "Thrillers don't have repeat values" - goes the saying. This may just be the minus point for 'Deewangee', in the otherwise well-written script.
