Cashing in on the success of “Raaz”, the hit pair is back with the same producer and writer to recreate the magic, in “Gunaah”. But you doubt the film’s prospects in the long run.

Inspector Prabha (Bipasha Basu) is at loggerheads with another misbehaving inspector Digvijay Pandey. To sort out her problems, Prabha takes valuable advice from a former havaldar Mr Gokhale (Ashutosh Rana), whom she refers to as Uncle. Such is Uncle’s plight, that he is now reduced to a mere ragpicker.

------
In the meantime, a wealthy businessman is murdered and the police zero-in on Aditya (Dino Morea, his screen name in Raaz too), as the likely killer. The case is handed to Prabha, much to the dislike of Inspector Pandey. But she is not able to make Aditya speak. She turns to Uncle again for advice who tells Prabha to befriend Aditya first. She then realizes that Aditya and herself have many things in common. Both share a violent past and are on the run to change the whole system. She joins the police force whereas Aditya transforms himself from a ‘rakshak’ (firefighter) to a ‘krantikaari’ (killer). Next, Aditya escapes from custody with the help of his ‘krantikaari’ organization friends, and the case is given to Prabha’s rival, Pandey. Reels and reels later, the film drags to a ‘make-believe’ climax in a police station, with only one question coming to your mind repeatedly, “How is this possible?” It would be a ‘gunaah’ to divulge the ‘raaz’ as to who among the lead pairs, gets killed in the end.

The dialogues are, in any sense, ‘tapori’, moreso by Prabha and Pandey. Almost all the songs are in dream sequences. The screenplay is loose, thereby killing the suspense.

Of the cast, Bipasha Basu plays her role on the same wavelength as her earlier films. There’s nothing new to look out for. Whereas, Dino Morea is above average. His silence speaks volumes. You can make out from the fact that he hardly spoke a line or two in the entire first half.

VERDICT : As compared to ‘Raaz’ – The same hit pair, the same producer and writer. But what may make the difference is – The Director.
